The dryer vent is the one piece of home maintenance where neglect has a genuinely dangerous outcome. Lint is flammable, the dryer produces heat, and the vent connects the two. Clogged dryer ducts are a well-documented cause of house fires, and the vent is also the reason a dryer takes two cycles to dry a load, which is what most people notice first. Here is how to tell what shape yours is in and what to do about it.
Warning signs
- Clothes take longer than one cycle to dry, or come out hot but damp.
- The top of the dryer is hot to the touch during a cycle.
- The laundry room gets warm and humid while the dryer runs.
- A burning smell during or after a cycle.
- The outside vent flap does not open when the dryer is running, or barely moves.
- Lint around the outside vent hood, or none at all when there should be some.
- It has been more than a year since anyone cleaned it, or you do not know when it was last done.
What a proper vent looks like
- Rigid metal duct or semi-rigid aluminium for the run through the wall, ceiling or crawlspace. Smooth interior, joints taped with foil tape, not screws, because screws catch lint.
- As short and straight as possible. Every elbow and every foot of length reduces airflow. Manufacturers specify a maximum length that shrinks with each bend.
- A short flexible metal transition between the dryer and the wall, only long enough to move the dryer, not kinked or crushed behind it.
- An exterior hood with a damper that opens with airflow and closes to keep out pests. No screen, which clogs with lint.
- No plastic or foil flex duct anywhere in the run. It is the material most often found in older installs and the one most often involved when a vent catches fire.
Cleaning the vent
The lint screen catches most of the lint, and the rest goes into the duct. Over a year, especially with a long run, it builds up on the walls of the duct and at the elbows.
- 1Unplug the dryer or shut the gas, pull it out, and disconnect the transition duct.
- 2Clean the dryer's exhaust port and the transition.
- 3Run a rotary brush kit on a drill through the duct from the inside, working toward the outside hood. Vacuum what comes out.
- 4Go outside, remove or open the hood, and clean it and the last section of duct from that end.
- 5Reconnect everything with foil tape, push the dryer back without kinking the transition, and run it empty to confirm the outside flap opens fully.
Short, straight vents through an exterior wall are a homeowner job with a brush kit. Long runs through the attic or crawlspace, roof terminations, and any vent you cannot see the whole length of are worth having done. It is a normal item for us on a maintenance visit and fits alongside the other seasonal tasks in our Georgia home maintenance calendar.
How often
Once a year for a typical household. Twice a year for a large family, a long duct run, or a house with pets. Clean the lint screen every load and wash it occasionally; dryer sheets leave a film on the screen that reduces airflow even when it looks clean.
When the duct needs replacing or rerouting
If the vent is plastic or foil flex, replace it. If the run is long with several elbows and the dryer still struggles after cleaning, the route may need shortening, which sometimes means going out a different wall, or a booster fan. If the dryer is on an interior wall and vents into the attic or the crawlspace rather than outside, that is wrong and it needs to be corrected. It is one of the first things we check on a laundry room remodel.
Questions we get
Can the dryer vent into the garage or crawlspace?
No. Lint and moisture belong outside. Venting into an enclosed space is a fire and a mould problem.
Do I need a dryer vent cleaning service or can a handyman do it?
Either, if the person has the brush kit and checks the whole run. We do it as part of a maintenance visit and fix the duct at the same time if it needs it.
What about the lint inside the dryer?
Lint also collects inside the dryer cabinet around the heating element. Cleaning that is a bigger job and is usually done every few years or when the dryer is serviced.
