Drafts are usually blamed on windows and usually are not windows. Air leaks in a house come from a lot of small gaps, and the cheap fixes address most of them.
Before spending money on replacement windows, find out where the air is actually moving.
Finding the leaks
- The hand test. On a windy or cold day, run your hand slowly around door and window perimeters, outlets on exterior walls, and where the wall meets the floor.
- The incense or candle test. Move a smoke source slowly around suspect areas and watch the smoke deflect. Effective and free.
- The paper test on doors. Close a dollar bill in the door and pull. If it slides out easily, the seal at that point is not sealing.
- Look for daylight around door frames from inside with the lights off.
- A blower door test, done professionally, quantifies the whole house and finds leaks you would never guess.
Doors
Weatherstripping
The perimeter seal. It compresses, hardens and tears over years. Replacing it is inexpensive and it is the highest-value door fix.
Types: adhesive foam (cheapest, shortest-lived), V-strip or tension seal (durable, good for jambs), and door-jamb kits with a rigid backing and compressible bulb (best, and what we install).
Door sweeps and thresholds
The gap under the door is often the largest single leak in a house. A door sweep on the bottom of the door, or an adjustable threshold, closes it.
Many thresholds have adjustment screws under a cap that raise or lower the seal. Most homeowners never know these exist and they are free to adjust.
Alignment
If the gap is uneven — tight at the top, wide at the bottom — the door or frame has shifted. Adjusting hinges, adding a longer screw into the framing at the top hinge, or shimming often fixes it without new weatherstripping.
Windows
Caulk
Around the exterior trim and where the frame meets the siding. Caulk fails on a Georgia sun exposure within years — it cracks, shrinks and pulls away.
Remove the old caulk properly rather than layering over it, and use an exterior-grade product rated for the substrate.
Sash locks
A double-hung window seals when the lock pulls the sashes together. A loose or unengaged lock leaves the meeting rail open. Lock every window in winter — it is a free fix that people overlook constantly.
Weatherstripping and glazing
Window weatherstripping wears like door weatherstripping and can be replaced. On older wood windows, failed glazing putty lets air past the glass itself, and re-glazing is a real repair option.
Interior storm panels and film
Insulating film is genuinely effective for a season and it is very cheap. Interior storm panels are a serious option for historic windows you do not want to replace.
Other leak points people miss
- Electrical outlets and switches on exterior walls — foam gaskets behind the plate cost pennies and there are a lot of them.
- Where plumbing and cables enter the house.
- Dryer vents and exhaust hoods with failed dampers.
- Fireplace dampers left open — a chimney is a large open hole to the outside.
- Attic pull-down stairs, usually uninsulated and unsealed.
- The sill plate where the framing meets the foundation, visible from the crawlspace.
- Recessed lights and bath fan housings.
When replacement makes sense
Replacement windows are expensive and the energy payback alone rarely justifies them on its own. Replace when:
- Frames are rotted or the sashes no longer operate
- Seals have failed on double glazing — the fogging between panes cannot be repaired
- They are single-pane and you are already doing exterior work
- Security, egress or noise is the driver
- The appearance matters to you and you are staying in the house
If the goal is purely comfort and energy cost, air sealing and attic insulation deliver more for far less money.
