Builder-grade houses around Newnan share a look: three-inch baseboard, two-inch casing, no crown, and flat hollow doors. It is the cheapest trim package a builder can install, and it is why a room can have fresh paint and new floors and still feel unfinished. Trim is the fix. It is one of the few remodeling categories where the material is cheap and the result is obvious.
Ranked by impact
- 1Taller baseboard. Replacing three-inch base with five to seven inches changes every room it touches. It is the highest return trim upgrade there is.
- 2Crown molding. Finishes the top of the wall and makes a ceiling feel intentional. The biggest visual change in a living room or dining room.
- 3Door and window casing. Wider casing with a backband or a header makes windows and doors read as features instead of holes.
- 4Wainscoting or board-and-batten. A dining room, entry, hallway or bathroom treatment. More work, more impact, and it protects the wall.
- 5Chair rail and picture rail. Cheap, quick, and easy to overdo. Best used as part of a wainscot rather than on its own.
Sizing trim to the room
Trim that is too small for the ceiling height looks like an afterthought; too large and it crowds the room.
- 8-foot ceilings: baseboard 4 to 5.5 inches, crown 3 to 4.5 inches. Keep crown modest or it lowers the ceiling.
- 9-foot ceilings: baseboard 5.5 to 7 inches, crown 4.5 to 6 inches. The most common ceiling height in newer local subdivisions and the easiest to trim well.
- 10 feet and up: baseboard 7 inches or more, crown 6 inches or a built-up profile of two or three pieces.
- Casing is generally narrower than the baseboard so the base can die into it cleanly. A plinth block at the bottom of the casing solves the mismatch when the base is much taller.
Wainscoting and board-and-batten
Both cover the lower part of a wall with a panelled treatment and a cap. Traditional wainscot uses raised or recessed panels and is the most labour. Board-and-batten uses flat vertical strips over a smooth surface and is the most common request now because it suits both farmhouse and modern rooms.
- Height. A third of the wall is the classic proportion, around 32 to 36 inches on an 8-foot wall. Taller, around 54 to 60 inches, works in a bathroom or hall.
- The wall behind. Battens over orange-peel or knockdown texture show the texture between the strips. Either skim the wall smooth or sheet it with thin panel first.
- Outlets and switches. Every one inside the treatment needs to be handled: boxes extended, plates fitted, battens planned around them.
- Bathrooms. Use MDF only where it will never see standing water, and prime every edge. PVC or primed pine is safer near a tub.
Where the labour goes
The material is a small part of a trim job. The time is in cutting, coping inside corners, scribing to uneven floors and ceilings, filling, caulking, and painting. Crown in particular is unforgiving: every joint has to be tight, and out-of-square corners, which is every corner in an older house, take patience. A room that looks like an afternoon of work is usually a day of carpentry and a day of finish.
If the room is being painted anyway, trim goes in first and gets painted with the room. Our interior paint post covers sheen and prep, and trim is where a semi-gloss or satin earns its keep. Trim installation and painting are both part of what we do as interior painting and handyman work.
Questions we get
MDF or wood?
For painted trim in a dry room, primed MDF is straight, stable and cheaper, and it takes paint well. Use finger-jointed or solid pine where it will be bumped a lot or near moisture. Solid wood for stained trim.
Can crown go on a room with a vaulted ceiling?
It can, but the transitions at the slope are difficult and often look awkward. Many vaulted rooms are better served by taller base and casing and leaving the ceiling line alone.
Should baseboard go behind or in front of the new floor?
New floor first, then baseboard on top of it. If the floor is not changing, the base goes on with a small gap and a shoe molding covers it. Doing the base before an LVP or laminate floor traps the floor and stops it from expanding.
