The garage door is the one thing in a house people genuinely worry about having left open, and it is one of the few smart upgrades that pays for itself in peace of mind almost immediately.
You usually do not need a new opener.
Retrofit controllers
A retrofit device wires into your existing opener's terminals — the same terminals your wall button uses — and adds a sensor that detects whether the door is open or closed. It then gives you app control, status, alerts and automation.
What you get:
- Open and close from your phone from anywhere.
- Status you can check — the killer feature, and the one people use daily.
- Alerts when the door has been open for a set time.
- Automatic close schedules.
- Access for family members without extra remotes.
- Guest and delivery access with time limits on some systems.
Retrofit kits work with the large majority of openers made in the last few decades. Cost is a fraction of a new opener.
When your opener is too old
Two situations where a retrofit is not appropriate:
- 1No photo-eye safety sensors. Federal safety requirements have mandated these since the early 1990s. An opener without them cannot be safely remote-operated, because nothing stops the door closing on a child, a pet or a car. If your opener predates that, replace it — this is a safety issue independent of the smart upgrade.
- 2Fixed-code remotes. Older openers use a fixed code that can be captured and replayed. Modern openers use rolling codes that change every use. If your remote is old enough to have DIP switches inside it, the security of the whole system is weak.
If you are replacing the opener
- Belt drive is quieter than chain drive — worth it if there is a bedroom above or beside the garage. Direct-drive and jackshaft models are quieter still.
- Horsepower matched to door size and weight. A heavy insulated double door needs more than a light single.
- Battery backup so the door works in a power outage. Genuinely useful in a Georgia storm.
- Built-in Wi-Fi on most current models, removing the need for a retrofit device.
- Built-in camera on some models, which lets you see the garage rather than just its status.
- Jackshaft (wall-mount) openers free up ceiling space entirely and are excellent in garages with storage overhead or low headroom.
Security considerations
- Remove the emergency release cord's reachability from outside. A coat hanger through the top of a door can catch the release on some installations. Many openers have a shield or the cord can be shortened.
- Do not leave a remote clipped to a visor in a car parked outside. It is a key to your house.
- Lock the door between the garage and the house. People consistently do not, and the garage is the softest entry point on most homes.
- Use rolling-code equipment.
- Enable notifications so an unexpected opening tells you immediately.
Useful automations
- Auto-close after a set time. Solves the 'did we leave it open' problem permanently.
- Close at a fixed time each night.
- Notify if open after dark.
- Turn on garage and exterior lights when the door opens after sunset.
- Close when everyone leaves, if you use presence detection — set this one up carefully and test it.
Installation notes
Retrofit installs are usually straightforward but they need the opener's terminals identified correctly, the sensor mounted where it reads the door reliably, and Wi-Fi coverage in the garage — which, as with most detached or corner spaces, is frequently the weak point. See our guide on Wi-Fi dead zones.
If the opener is mounted high with limited access, or the wiring is unclear, it is worth having it done rather than working off a ladder guessing at terminals.
