Closet and Storage Build-Outs: Getting Real Capacity Out of Small Spaces

How to double usable closet capacity, the dimensions that matter, and the storage projects with the best return in a Georgia home. Newnan and Coweta County.

A standard builder closet is a single rod with a shelf above it. That layout wastes roughly half the vertical space in the closet, and it is why every house feels short on storage regardless of size.

Reorganising that volume is one of the cheapest meaningful improvements available in a home.

Double hanging is the single biggest win

Most clothing does not need full-height hanging space. Shirts, folded trousers, jackets and skirts all fit under about 42 inches.

Splitting a section of closet into two rods, one above the other, doubles hanging capacity in that section immediately. Keep one full-height section for dresses and long coats and convert the rest.

Useful dimensions:

  • Double hang: lower rod at about 40–42 inches, upper rod at about 80–84 inches.
  • Single hang for long items: rod at about 66–72 inches.
  • Depth: 24 inches for hanging clothes. Anything deeper is wasted; anything shallower and hangers hit the back wall.
  • Shelf above: leave enough headroom to actually get boxes in and out.

Where the other capacity hides

  • The floor. Almost always empty in a builder closet. Drawers, shoe racks or bins.
  • Above the shelf. Usually two feet of dead air. Add a second shelf for seasonal storage.
  • The back of the door. Hooks, racks, over-door organisers.
  • The corners in a walk-in, which are typically unusable with basic rods and become useful with proper shelving.

Reach-in vs walk-in

Counterintuitively, a well-organised reach-in closet often holds more per square foot than a walk-in, because a walk-in gives up floor area to standing room.

If you have a walk-in and it feels inefficient, the fix is usually shelving to the ceiling on all available walls, not more floor space.

Systems: wire, laminate, or built-in

  • Wire shelving. Cheapest, quick to install, ventilated. Small items tip over and folded clothes get shelf marks. Fine for utility closets and pantries.
  • Laminate systems. The value sweet spot for bedroom closets — solid shelves, drawer options, adjustable, and it looks finished.
  • Custom built-in millwork. Best appearance and best fit for awkward spaces, most expensive. Worth it in a primary closet or where the geometry is unusual.
  • Freestanding units. Renter friendly and movable, less efficient use of the space.

Storage projects with real payoff

Pantry

Shallow shelves beat deep ones. Anything more than about 14 inches deep hides food at the back until it expires. Pull-out shelves solve depth where you have it.

Garage

Overhead racks are the most underused storage in a house — seasonal items, luggage and holiday storage all go up and off the floor. Wall systems for tools and yard equipment recover the perimeter.

Under stairs

Usually a void or a token closet with a door in the wrong place. Drawers built into the stair face, or a full pull-out unit, turn dead volume into genuinely useful storage.

Mudroom or drop zone

A bench with cubbies at the entry the family actually uses. Small project, disproportionate improvement in daily life.

Laundry

Cabinets above the machines, a folding surface, and a rod for hanging. Most laundry rooms are a floor with two appliances on it.

Attic and crawlspace caution

Georgia attics reach extreme temperatures and Georgia crawlspaces are humid. Neither is appropriate for photographs, documents, electronics, candles, or anything that warps. Use sealed containers and store only what genuinely tolerates the conditions.
